Research Interests

Eshita Boral is currently an Associate Professor of Geography at the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Calcutta (CSSSC). Prior to joining CSSSC, she served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography and Disaster Management, Tripura University. She completed her Ph.D. from University of Calcutta entitled “Role of Highways in Area Development of West Bengal; A Geospatial Analysis” with Research Fellowship from the University Grants Commission (UGC). Her doctoral research mostly focused on the importance of highways in the development of a region as a whole. Additionally, she also got UGC travel grant to present her research work in international platforms at University of Cologne, Germany and Jagiellonian University, Krakow, Poland. Her works have been published in several national/international journals and edited volumes. She also has completed a short-term empirical research project under ICSSR.

Her research interest includes Transport Geography, Urban and Rural Studies, Population and Settlement Geography, Social, Cultural and Political Geography and Regional Planning. She particularly specialises in Transport Geography exploring the various transport systems, infrastructure, networks, and the relationships between transportation, society, and the environment. She focuses on the ways in which urban areas develop, grow, and function as hubs of economic, social, and transportation gateways. Her works also concerns with understanding patterns of human settlement and the relationship between people and their environment, the spatial aspects of social life and cultural practices which shapes the rural and urban areas particularly aiming at developing proper planning policies for the region.
